As much removed as any current hit from Skrillex is from foundational dubstep landmarks like Skream‘s “Midnight Request Line,” so too are the latest manifestations from a long list of dubstep’s pioneers. Many of the veterans that helped to shape that spatial and hypnotic sound are returning to the experimentation stages and developing something new once again. Take for instance the sounds of Addison Groove, the project of dubstep DJ and producer Headhunter. Those Headhunter tracks stretched back into drum & bass, but Addison Groove’s latest branches are often influenced by Chicago ghetto house, though he adapts it with his own functionality for today’s dancefloor. Headhunter’s Tempa classic “Sleepwalker” should server as a nice contrast to any of the tracks on Addison Groove’s latest full-length album, Transistor Rhythm.

Eximinds & Sarah Russell – Pain Into Purpose Bringing a fresh sound with an edge and warmth to the progressive scene, Russian newcomer due Eximinds have been building momentum this year with a string of high quality remixes and releases. So far they have remixed such names as Paul Oakenfold, Beat Service, Bobina & Temple One and landing them on Enhanced, Armada and Adrian Raz Recordings.

“Pain into Purpose” is a Vocal collaboration with British Chill Out singer Sarah Russell that delivers the feel good uplifting lyric. Mixes include Philippe el Sisi and Matt Millon.

Back in April, Tiesto and production pal Wolfgang Gartner let loose with “We Own The Night,” a progressive house tune and a half featuring the sultry pipes of Luciana. Now they’ve got the visual goods to accompany said club banger.

German DJ/producer Tocadisco heads to Toolroom Records to release his power-packed double header of “The Groove” and “The Clamp.” A veteran of dance music in every sense, Tocadisco brings his trademark dance-savy sound to his next efforts, even darker than we remember from March’s “That Miami Track.” While remaining out of mainstream spotlight, Tocadisco continues to produce dance floor killers and please club-goers like he has done for over 15 years. American electropop band Passion Pit emerged on to the scene with their 2009 release of their album, Manners.  The single “Sleepyhead” was sensational and drove them into mainstream popularity.  Despite only reaching #105 on the Billboard Hot 100, the track reached number 9 on Billboard’s Heatseaker Songs, a music chart devoted to “breaking and entering” tracks.

While the past three years have been appeared relatively quiet for the band, they have remained busy. In a 2010 interview with the New Music Express, Passion Pit lead vocalist Michael Angelakos admitted that they had begun work on a new album. Only recently though, has this new album received a title, Gossamer.

Passion Pit just released their first single off the upcoming album, titled Talk A Walk. I, among many others, eagerly checked out the track. My first impressions of the track are that (1) the unique falsetto of the lead vocalist Michael is gone and (2) there’s less of an electronic influence and so now the music just indie rather than electronica. I’m sure with these changes, they will lose many devoted fans, only to be replaced by a slew of new ones.

Bass monsters Datsik and Bare have come together to collaborate on this downright filthy track.  Bass Union is a new channel that is going to be home to a lot of new music videos for new bass music.  On the heals of the remix EP of King Kong, a new video for it.

The video shows two young guys having fun as one of them grabs a camera and the other dresses up in a gorilla suit parading through   LA on a path of destruction. It’s a guerilla shoot of a gorilla video.

About a month ago we interviewed SoCal dubstep producer We Bang, 1/2 of Mustache Riot. In addition to having tracks released on Reid Speed’s Play Me Records, We Bang heads up his own label, Smashed Beatz. The label has steadily been growing, and now they have released the debut EP from Denver bass producer, ForeverKID.

Mazzaroth E.P. is a 5 track release featuring dubstep, drumstep and drum & bass tunes.  With collaborations from Direct Feed, Rostik, and the aforementioned We Bang, this is collection of some hard hitting bass monsters.  This EP shows off a creative side that uses rasta-inspired samples, an uptempo energy and a diverse set of skills as he explores the various genre directions.  For a debut EP, this hits quite hard so make sure you brace yourself for it.

Italian-born, Los Angeles resident, Congorock, has just released the remix pack for his smasher ‘Ivory’ on Ultra Music today, and it’s suited with an all-star cast of producers including Laidback Luke, The Bloody Beetroots, Mumbai Science, and NT89. Pretty darn serious. Each remix is great on its own as well. Laidback Luke’s new rendition is more of an edit, staying true to Rocco’s initial arrangement while deepening and darkening the original with some additional heavy bass. The Bloody Beetroots stay true to their grungy Electro roots, while Mumbai Science and NT89 bring on the Techno in a big way.
