Following up their 2015 hit album Gracetown, the band have been back in the studio with long time friend and collaborator Steve Schram. The yet to be titled 3rd studio album is planned for release in the first quarter of 2017.

THE STORY SO FAR

Indie pop quartet San Cisco were formed during 2009 in the city of Freemantle, Western Australia. The bandmembers — guitarist/vocalist Jordi Davieson, drummer/vocalist Scarlett Stevens, bassist Nick Gardner, and drummer Josh Biondillo — met during high school, and in 2010 released their first EP, Golden Revolver.

The ultra-poppy title track gained a fair amount of airplay on the top Australian radio station, Triple J, eventually being nominated for the station’s Unearthed J Award. This popularity led to the band being signed to the legendary Albert Productions, the home of the Easybeats and AC/DC, among other Aussie acts. Their second EP, Awkward, then moved to major label RCA for their self-titled album, which was released in 2012 in Australia, and in the summer of 2013 in North America. Writing for the next record began in hotel rooms and in vans as the group toured the world promoting the album.

Returning home, they enlisted the help of producer Steve Schram, who pushed the band members to work harder and invest more of themselves in the music. The results of their hard work showed on their second album, the more sophisticated and emotionally diverse Gracetown, which was released by Island City Records in early 2015.

‘Is It Over’ combines Disco Fries & Shanahan’s breathtaking, forward thinking production with Shy Martin’s effortlessly smooth vocals in a track brimming with Summer-infused energy. With both Disco Fries & Shanahan receiving extensive airplay across the likes of Sirius XM’s BPM channel along with repeated chart and streaming success in the past few years, ‘Is It Over’ brings a promising, creative collaborative effort together in a bonafide hit.

De’Borah debuts ‘Chambers On A Sleeve’ EP this November

In July 2012, De’Borah released ‘A Thousand Tongues’, an EP which has since received airplay on BBC Radio 6Music and BBC Radio Kent. Her next EP, ‘Waiting Games’, continued that run of success with airplay from BBC Radio London, BBC Radio 6Music and XFM. Her latest EP, the impending ‘Chambers On A Sleeve’, could well surpass those successes.

Encouraged by her father who brought her up on a nourishing diet of Gospel music and Stevie Wonder classics, the soulful edge to her music is what sets De’Borah apart from her contemporaries. Couple that with the Joni Mitchell-influenced story-telling and you have a singer-songwriter whose longevity is all but assured. At just 11 years old De’Borah began writing and singing her own songs, before she was given a guitar at the age of 13. Fast-forward to her college days, at 16 years old De’Borah was already playing live shows, thinking nothing of the almost vertical learning curve. Now she plays live shows all across London, and recently performed in New York, Bulgaria and Germany.

Definitive songs like ‘Three Word Phrase’ and ‘Just A Boy’ show that what makes De’Borah special is her uncanny ability to tap into the most fundamental of human experiences: heartache, alienation and burning love. “I have a vulnerability about me,” she says “and I really believe that not only does vulnerability connect with people but it’s quite empowering. That’s what runs through my music.”

De’Borah’s music has justifiably earned her a lot of respect within the industry. Ivor Novello-winning Chris Difford (Squeeze) described her as a “delicate and perfect writer”, while BBC Radio London’s Gary Crowley praised what he calls “a wonderful purity to her voice and songs.” It’s easy to see why she’s earned such praise. De’Borah’s lyrics are captivating, thought-provoking and emotive, she paints vivid, mesmeric pictures with her songwriting that stay with you for days, and her use of imagery and wordplay is so endearing and charming you can’t help but give her your undivided attention.

‘Chambers On A Sleeve’, a play on the phrase “heart on the sleeve”, is a thoughtfully conceived four-track collection to be released in November, building on some of the themes she’s explored in the past but there’s a new dimension to this release. This time round De’Borah expands upon the idea of the heart being like a home, with each of the four chambers representing a different song, culminating of course in the EP’s closer “The House”. Sonically, it’s a much warmer and fuller sound with a comforting richness about it. Most importantly, this is the first release she produced herself, along with Jesse Hackett (Stones Throw Records, Gorillaz), and this hands on approach has taken us a step closer to hear De’Borah’s music exactly as she wants it to sound.

With music as tender and personal as De’Borah’s it seems only right that her music be shared in a relaxed, intimate setting. “I’m planning on doing a front room tour in January. I’ve done one before. Basically, fans get in touch with me. They invite their friends and family to the house and I perform a gig in their front room. It’s a nice way to connect with people, especially with new music. I’ve got a new EP coming out so it’ll be interesting to play new music in that setting and connect with new people.”

Balancing softly sung lyrics with powerful songwriting and potent, unforgettable melodies, De’Borah’s are songs that will outlive trends and buzz; they are songs with longevity that will be as potent and relevant in 50 years’ time as they are now.

Beyond the EP, you can expect plenty more music on the horizon since De’Borah’s more than ready to start work on an album in the near future and with any luck there’ll be a couple more songs along the way.

A name to look out for, Kago Pengchi makes his debut EP release on Enhanced Progressive with ‘The Phantom’ / ‘Sinabro’.
