MANIC FOCUS – Minds Rising

Minds Rising is an infectious encapsulation of Manic Focus’ roots in funk, soul, new-era hip hop, and electronic music. The album is an artful curation of the burgeoning Chicago music landscape and beyond, featuring appearances from cutting-edge hip hop artists, vocalists, producers, and musicians from across the country. Minds Rising is an opus two years in the making, and paints an aural illustration of Manic Focus’ shift from producer to composer — one beat, instrument and verse at a time.

Minds Rising features collaborations with a stacked roster of talented musicians, including the percussive genius of Adam Deitch (Lettuce, Break Science), powerful vocals of Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), and meticulous production of Late Night Radio, who all join forces on the album’s soulful lead single, “Stronger.” ProbCause lays down heavy bars on the trap anthem “Putting All Of My People On.” Russ Liquid backs “Habit” with a funky New Orleans style three-piece horn section, while emerging hip hop group the RapperChicks deliver witty, earth-shattering verses and a captivating chorus to round out the track. Brooklyn based musicians Exmag and Borahm Lee (Lowtemp Music, Break Science) harmonize on “Your X Now” to bring space jazz rhythms and twinkling piano elements to Manic Focus’ stellar composition. Other collaborations include features from future bass producer Psymbionic on “Pushing,” rising Chicago stars Statik on “Stochastic Resonance,” Carlile on “Timeless,” and the razor sharp lyricism of Chicago rapper Psalm One on “Joy In the Noise.”

Josh Butler Releases ‘Heroes Of House’ Vol. 3

UK house DJ and producer Josh Butler is back yet again with the third and final instalment of his ‘Heroes of House’ series. For this episode, Josh has teamed up with long time friend Bontan, a pairing which is collectively responsible for one of Beatport’s best-selling tracks of all time – ‘Got a Feeling.’ Also on the EP is Josh’s ‘Origins’ remix of Chicago house legend Robert Owens’ classic No.1 Dance Hit ‘I’ll Be Your Friend.’ The EP is out now on Josh’s label ORIGINS RCRDS.

Remixing a legendary Chicago house track like Robert Owens’ ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’ is no mean feat. Yet, Josh’s ‘Origins Mix’ manages to successfully take the David Morales-produced 1992 classic into new, deeper and darker territory. Focusing on the iconic vocal track and filtering Satoshi Tomiie’s original keys, Josh’s mix suddenly bursts into one of his trademark grooves, an updated, minimal take on the original bass line. Built for the club, the track moves into a dynamic section with luscious pads and urgent chord stabs that ramp up the energy.

Josh’s collaboration with Bontan ‘Call You Back’ is a sub bass heavy roller, punctuated by a simple but effective vocal refrain. Synth stabs and airtight percussion push the track through the motions, with hi-hats cutting through the mix as the rides create an unrelenting drive.

Over the course of three volumes Josh’s Origins project saw him collaborate with house legends and heroes Todd Terry, Marshall Jefferson, Santé, Darius Syrossian and Bontan and has enabled him to remix Robert Owens. Davi Comodo’s comic book style artwork has given each collaborator a unique character over the series, bringing the project together and demonstrating both the individuality and the togetherness of the music. Stay tuned to Josh’s socials below for all ORIGINS RCRDS news.

Superpoze unveils visual album “For We The Living” + North American tour dates

French musician Superpoze just released his second album titled “For We The Living.” The 8-track LP is a remarkable combination of divine music and visuals, which narrate a two-part act. The first four tracks broach an impending disaster, with a soundtrack that describes its development and climax, while the following four tracks symbolize an emotional aftermath.

The ethereal album is entirely instrumental, except for “A Photograph,” where the haunting song is accompanied by vocals from Dream Koala. The aural journey that “For We The Living” takes the listener through is accompanied by a series of videos and a booklet, which Superpoze created with the artist collective Television.

Superpoze has an incredible setup to accompany him in his live shows. Each show tells a story from start to finish as he plays on a synth pad, classic piano, controllers and other live band components. For the first time, Superpoze is embarking on a North American tour with shows in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Unlike other artists, Superpoze had never gone to a nightclub to hear music. His very first time in a club was as a performer. This uniqueness stems from his upbringing, where he first studied at a music conservatory and has a love for classical composers and romantic pianists. The progression of his music taste and discovery lead him to music like Air and other french bands, into experimental acts like Boards Of Canada, Flying Lotus and other music from Warp and Ninja Tune.

North American Live dates
5/2 – New York, US – Mercury Lounge
5/3 – Chicago, US – Schubas
5/5 – San Francisco, US – Popscene @ Rickshaw Stop
